MONTESSORI ON WHEELS (MOW)
The Freethinking Foundation is a nonprofit that set up the World’s first “Montessori School on Wheels” in partnership with Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), Government of Karnataka in May 2022. This initiative is designed to take early learning to the doorstep of marginalized children aged 2.5 to 6 years who reside in slums within Bengaluru. The Montessori on Wheels initiative breaks the mould by offering it to all children in 3 different regional languages. In accordance with the National Education Policy (2020), this program sets children free by providing a multi-faceted, inquiry-based and play-based education.
PHYSICAL ANGANWADIS
After the success of the MOW initiative, The Freethinking Foundation partnered with the Ministry of Women and Child Development, Karnataka to support the learning needs of children in the Anganwadis in November 2022. The Foundation provided Montessori learning materials, infrastructure and trained Montessori teachers in multiple Anganwadis. Attendance in these Angawadis increased by over 35% and the program has improved the learning outcomes of close to over 300 children as of October 2024. The Foundation aims to scale the above initiative over the next few years to cater to about 150,000 children by March 2026
TEACHER TRAINING
There is a dearth of trained Montessori teachers, who are also proficient in the local language leading the Freethinking Foundation to launch a Teacher Training program. Mothers and other women from the communities took an interest in the Anganwadi program that we had started. As a result, the foundation empowered these women from within the community to become Montessori teachers. They were given extensive training in the Montessori and experiential learning programs. Currently, the foundation employs all these teachers and we are on a mission to train another 10,000 teachers by March 2027.
Wonder on Wheels (WOW)
Most pre-primary education focuses on ensuring that children are school-ready by inculcating literacy and numeracy skills. However, creativity, collaboration and communication are found to be equally essential competencies for the 21st century. Based on this insight, the Freethinking Foundation also launched a Wonder on Wheels bus. This is primarily to offer creative education for marginalized young children. This idea was selected as a Project for Peace, supported by Trinity College, USA to redesign and refurbish the bus with materials.
